Malvern Barn Conversion Showcases Specialty Finishes
Old Village Master Painters and the Old Village Design Studio™ recently worked with Read & Company Architects, Hamilton Design Associates and Cherokee Construction in converting a Chester County barn into a fabulous living space with a northern european aesthetic. The project was featured in the July/August 2017 issue of Elle Décor Magazine.
We created custom, specialty finishes such as a soft, bleached effect on the pillowed reclaimed oak floors, a lighter "palomino" stain for the 2 story bedroom cabinetry, and a fumed oak effect on the wall panels.

'The challenge, of course, was to invest new construction with a sense of intimacy.'' Hamilton’s decor brings in the life. Her approach: “Big with small, hard with soft—that’s design.” The wife’s directive was just as simple. “The house needs to be sanguine, comfortable, and durable,” she recalls telling her designer. “I wanted warmth and coziness with natural materials and textures, but I don’t like pattern.” So there are shearling rugs and nubby carpets underfoot, and acres of linen, raw silk, and canvas to soften the expanses of floor-to-ceiling glass. Milk paint gives the walls some patina. Cloud-shaped light fixtures float playfully above the master bed.'
We created a number of special treatments for this home including a soft wood wash for the antique oak floor shown above. Some of our work is shown below.
